FREE SPIRIT MEDIA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming media and society for content creators of color that seek opportunities to produce and distribute original content and to pursue artistic, personal, and professional aspirations.
For nearly two dedicates, Free Spirit Media has assisted in helping over 6,500 youth to share their stories, find inspiration, build skills rooted in media literacy, and engage with peers and diffident communities through digital media.
The organization’s founder, Jeff McCarter, first began his mission to empower youth across Chicago’s West and South Sides by forming HoopsHIGH, a sports broadcasting after school program. After several years of dedication and hard work, McCarter has expanded his vision into a total of six annual programs for youth between the ages of 14 to 25. Each program is designed to help young creators pursue their passions both while attending school and outside of school.
Moreover, Free Spirit Media’s efforts had led to the production of over 700 compelling media pieces each year, in the form of documentaries, sports broadcasts news packages, audio stories, PSAs, and narrative films. With each production, the voices of hundreds of young people can be heard and cherished for years to come.
